 This week in kindergarten...

We welcomed Elder Shirley to our school to teach us about indigenous hoop dancing.

We spent a lot of time talking about family and celebrated how special and unique each family can be. Children used rocks to create portraits of their family.

We continued to refine our drawing skills by learning to draw triangles and use details to turn them into fun things like ice cream cones and party hats. Next week, we will start our weekly letter investigation. Our first letter will be M!

Here's a note from Mrs. Planden about what the kiddos were up to in math on Monday:

In kindergarten this week we have continued our weekly number study with the number 2! We used multi-modalities (lots of different ways!) to practice writing the numeral, and we learned how to say it in sign language and in Blackfoot.  As the Blackfoot are the original caretakers of our land, and recognizing that we are all treaty people, we will be learning numbers 1-10 in the Blackfoot language. The links below are the numbers 1 and 2 in Blackfoot if you wanted to learn alongside your child.

We also made the numeral out of play dough, searched for it in magazines and practiced our fine motor skills by cutting and pasting some of the numbers we found. We determined whether we could fair share the number and then practiced our skills in subitizing it (which means to recognize it at a glance, without counting each individual dot)
Thank you so much to everyone who brought in things that represented the number two. Those that forgot were able to talk about body parts that we had two of. (Eyebrows, eyes, hands, feet, etc.)  Next week, it will be trickier to name body parts we have 3 of (haha) so thanks in advance for supporting your child to bring in items that represent the number 3!!
